Coalition Tackles Teen Mental Health Needs
I AM H·E·R·E, launched by the Grant Halliburton Foundation in 2009, is the only coalition in North Texas focused solely on teen and young adult mental health. This collaborative, community-based coalition is working hard to meet specific needs in adolescent mental health, including:
- The need for information. We're developing a website with comprehensive information about mental health and community resources to serve North Texas teens, young adults, families, providers, professionals and other stakeholders.
- The need to identify and treat teen depression. We're introducing a teen depression screening tool to help primary care physicians identify and refer young people with mental, emotional and behavioral issues. It's currently being piloted in a Dallas pediatric practice.
- The need for teen support among peers. We are organizing support groups for teens living with depression and other mental health issues.
- The need to know the signs of depression. We are training people who work with youth to recognize teens in distress and lead them to help.
- The need to end the stigma. We are rolling out a nationally produced campaign to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.
Anyone with a desire to help strengthen the mental health safety net for teens and young adults is welcome to participate in the coalition. More info and meeting dates here.
